Competition

Freestyle knit and crochet competition

Choose a theme, such as colour, texture, the sea, spices, whatever – you make up your own theme and then provide a piece of freestyle knitting or crochet based on that theme. These will go on display during the Arts Trail and there will be a prize for the most creative.Arts Trail is 19th and 20th May 2012.

Call for Paper Village Printmakers to show their work!

Anyone who has taken part in any of the print workshops at Paper Village can submit one or two framed prints to be put on display for 2 weeks from the Arts Trail weekend on 19th and 20th May – please come and chat to me if you are interested in this .

Paper Village

Paper Village is an art and craft shop and a place to help you make and create. We sell both art and craft materials. This is because we recognise that many  artists also make crafts. Our range of stock is continuously developing in response to the needs of our customers.

Our core aims are to:

  • Provide information and resources about  making and creating
  • Support individuals to develop their creativity
  • Find ways to share resources – equipment hire etc
  • To facilitate collaborative creative projects and events

To this end we;

Sell an ever growing range of art and craft materials including over 200 types of paper and  card,  Sirdar and Rico wool, beads and findings , Pebeo acrylic paint, textile paints, blank cards, plain fabric, canvas boards, Golden digital grounds, glazing and  crystal resin, lino, gold leaf, glass paints, pencils and sketchbooks, Stamps and inks, cross stitch kits, Swann Morton knives, Stencil card, kids craft materials  and lots and lots  more.

Deliver art and craft workshops and individual tuition for adults. Things we have run over the last year include; making handmade books, origami, drawing, printing, crochet, writing, jewellery making, rag rug making, image transfer, card making, scrapbooking, bunting , sewing and knitting.

Organise collaborative projects and get involved with local events. Recently we got lots of people together to make an origami garden, organised  people to transform the street through yarn bombing, ran several craft markets, delivered a group print project, held a crochet a bowl day and are raising money for charity through our crochet a budgie event.

Hold making parties or team building events for adults or older children. Groups of friends come together to make bunting, charm bracelets, hand-made books, cards, beaded rings, mobiles, banners, crochet decorations, paint t-shirts. Masquerade masks or to have a lesson in a particular craft.

Have equipment for rent in the shop and a rubber stamp library  for you to take rubber stamps home. We have a sewing machine, badge making, Sizzix Big Shot, Zutter binder and lots of bits and pieces for you to use.

Have regular social groups for knitting and crochet Wednesday afternoon 2-5pm and some Saturdays 2-5pm . We will soon be doing the same for writing and drawing.

Offer help with projects or  for you to make  something such as  make your wedding invitations. We can cut shapes or letters for you with our Cricut cutter including  letters and basic shapes from iron-on vinyl, order specialist materials for you and show you how to do things.

Subversive cross stitch event

This takes place on Monday 4th June from 12 midday and is a free event – but you will need to pay for your materials and equipment . All this is available from the shop if you don’t have it already. For those of you who do not already do cross stitch there is a workshop to learn cross stitch on Tuesday 29th from 7 -9pm. The fee for this is £16 You will learn how to plan and make a cross stitch in readiness for the project
New Stock

We are now selling Clover pom-pom makers, needle felting tools and supplies, batik dyes and soya wax, marbeling inks, aqua wax, lots of new colours of ceramic pens,angelina fibres and an expanded range of craft kits and a large range of Chronicle books, writing journals and postcard books + coming soon Rico washi tape in many designs and Rico post it sticky notes

This event takes place on 9th June - free event which includes: Knitting on giant needles, making knitting needles, woolly pompoms, needled felting demo, knitting basics, YARNSTORMING a bus shelter and more

Ways of working with resin £25

This course will take place On Wednesday evening 23rd May 7-10pm and we will explore several techniques of working with resin:

Glazing, self bevelling resin over decorated paper, collage and found pieces of card
Resin paper - A technique used to soak decorated paper in resin - great for making lamps and illuminated objects
Crystal clear resin used to embed small objects and make buttons
Coloured resin


Exploring modern mixed media techniques £120

This course takes place on Wednesday evenings for 6 weeks. Next run starts on June 20th

1) Image transfer techniques - introduction to a variety of image transfer techniques including gel mediums, heat and plastic, tape, digital grounds and blender pens
2) Fused and embedded - Fused collage technique using sheer fabrics and papers and other found bits with gel mediums to make layered collage type materials which can be cut and sewn. Fusible web collage and working with Angelina fibres
3) Can you resist it - Exploring several different ways of working with resists including aqua wax on paper, Markal paintsicks and marbeling and transfer crayon resists over textures
4) Crackle and pop – There are different ways to make your work crack including crackle paste, layered wet glue and paint, two part crackle varnish and mediums like weathered wood
6) All Glazed over + All that glitters is not gold – Glazing resin is a new product that can make a shiny glasslike topcoat on your work and self bevels . Later we will explore: using gold leaf with stencils , gold gilding wax, gold heat embossing powder, glitter spray and varnish

Throughout the course you will learn techniques for bonding your work together, stitching into paper, and different types of adhesive, weaving paper etc. many of the techniques will be used in conjunction with familiar techniques such as stencilling, stamping, embossing paper, using heat foam to make stamps

In the meantime come and see some of the mixed media products we have on Sale - glazing resins, crackle mediums, Prisme colours, Tyvek, Bondaweb, Golden digital grounds, gel mediums, freezer paper, Lazertran, Imagemaker, foamboard and more. Needle Felting

Saturday 28th July - 2-5pm

• Tutor – Juliet Fleming (textile and ceramics artist)
• Cost – £24

This course is for beginners and will show you how to make spring themed motifs.
All materials provided.
Further materials/tools available in shop for this and all other courses.

We now sell neeedlefelting supplies including rovings, needles and brushes and those nifty tools with 5 needles





Linocutting for Beginners

Sunday 1st April - 9:30am–12:30pm

• Tutor – Mel Wickham (lino artist)
• Cost – £24

All materials for this course will be provided but you will need some linocutting tools (we sell these for around £5.50 and if necessary you can buy on the day

Linocutting Intermediate

Sunday 1st April - 2pm–5pm

• Tutor – Mel Wickham (lino artist)
• Cost – £30 (which includes the cost of making a registration plate.)

This course will introduce you to working in more than one colour and registering prints.
Participants may book both the beginner and intermediate courses at once. Please bring things along to inspire you!

Rubber Stamp Cutting for Beginners

Monday 28th May (2 identical sessions, please choose your start time) –
9:30am–12:30pm
1:30pm–4:30pm

• Tutor – Stephen Fowler (rubber stamp artist)
• Cost – £24 for one session
All you will need is a swann morton handle and size 10a blades ( sold in shop) and some things to inspire . Please bring books, pictures or sketchbooks with things to get you started.


Sewing Machine Course

Sewing Machine Classes for Beginners

6 weeks on Thursday evenings - 7pm–9pm
next run starts June 28th

Choose your own project or let our experienced sewing instructor guide you to develop your skills. Your sessions could include:

o Bunting
o Cushion covers and basic home furnishings
o Simple baby clothes
o Inserting zips and button holes
o Adjusting hems
o Fabric mobiles, gifts etc

Pirates and Parrots for the Arts trail on 19th and 20th May

The theme for this year’s Arts Trail is Pirates and all things Pirate, and we want everyone to dress up and walk around with parrots on their shoulders!

1. Felt Parrot Workshop

Sat 14th April - 2pm–5pm
Sun 15th April - 2pm–5pm
(Please note we are running two identical workshops and you will need to choose which to attend. Advance booking required.)

• Cost – £3 per person (please note, this workshop is for both adults and children, but is not suitable for children under the age of 8.)

2. Parrot Patterns

We have developed patterns for both felt and fabric to get you started (cost £1.50). We want you to use and adapt them creatively!

3. Competition

As part of the Arts Trail Pirate and Parrot extravaganza, we are running a competition for the most creative, exciting parrot! You can make your parrot in any way you like. The parrot could be knitted, sewn, cardboard, wire, papier machι, felted, metal or made from anything else you can think of! The top 10 parrots will be put on display in Paper Village window for at least a week after the trail. The prize will be announced in the next newsletter.

We want both adults AND children to join in the parrot-making and creating!

4. Pirate Hats

Sat 19th May - 9:30am – 4pm

• Cost – £1 per child
Pirate hat-making drop-in – aspiring pirates can drop in and make a simple pirate hat. We provide the card and skull & crossbones insignia for you to make hats with your children.


Learn to Knit for Beginners

6 weeks on Wednesday evenings - 7:30pm–9:30pm
Starting 4th April

• Tutor – Tristana Rodriguez
• Cost – £72 for 6 sessions

April 4th – Introduction to the basics using a project provided by Elise ( we will provide all the materials and tools for this first session ) You will also be given knitting homework !!
April 11th – Small project work – Elise will help you conquer any problems you are having with the basic stitches and help you to complete a small project. She will also help you identify a project that you would like to do and what you will need to do it (Patterns, Needles, Yarn)
April 18th – This and the next 3 sessions after the break will be divided into two parts . In the first half you will learn a new technique or stitch or small project and in the second half you will work on your own project

Two week break for you to get on with your projects

May 2nd,9th,16th - Completion of project or projects and help to decide what to do next. + a round up of internet resources, knit and natter groups available, places to get help and patterns etc.

Advanced Knitting Techniques

5 weeks on Tuesday evenings - 7.30pm-9.30pm
Starting 7th Feb

• Cost – £72 payable in advance (normal course fees are £8 per hour)

7th Feb - Basic Intarsia
14th Feb - Basic Fair Isle
13th Mar - Basic cables part 1
20th Mar - Basic cables part 2
27th Mar - Catch up and further development of previous sessions including people starting their own projects that use the techniques learnt.


Help hatch a flock of 101 crochet budgies

The aim of this project is to crochet a flock of 101 budgies and then install them in public venues to raise money for charity. Creators of the budgies will come from all walks of life, be old and young, male and female, crochet beginners and experts, everyone can take part. Creators can buy a Bert and Bessie Budgie pack for £5 containing everything that is required to make a budgie .

Making parties for adults or older children

Make a beaded ring or brooch - £75 for 6 people and £6 per head for any extra people ,people can also bring special bits and pieces to add to their ring or brooch - beads and buttons no experience is necessary

Make giant paper pom poms and flowers £75 for 6 people with £6 per head for any extra people. No experience necessary
Make your own cereal sketchbooks /notebook £60 for 6 people and £3 per head for any extra people

Make charm bracelets - £75 for 6 people and you will make a bracelet each – materials provided but you can buy extra bits and pieces

Make shared bunting or mobile – as a group you will create some bunting for a friend for their birthday. Each person will decorate about 3 flags and then you will sew it all together and can be painted , embroidered, beaded whatever . The minimum cost for 6 people for this workshop is £75 but you can buy extra decorating materials. We also do this for brides to be and older children with grandparents etc

This workshop is £75 for up to 8 children 8+ on a Sunday

Learn to crochet as a group - £75 for up to six people and you get your materials and hooks
